Hotel Wren - New Hotel in Palm Springs, United States
A Gateway to the Stillness of Joshua Tree
Located in Twentynine Palms, just minutes from the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, Hotel Wren occupies a landscape defined by silence, scale, and elemental beauty. Here, the desert feels both infinite and deeply personal, where shifting sands, sculptural rock formations, and ancient yucca fields create a living, breathing canvas. The setting is intentionally remote, yet accessible, offering guests the sensation of complete disconnection without isolation. Sunsets unfold in molten gold and violet hues, while nights reveal a sky saturated with stars, uninterrupted and immense.
A Restoration Rooted in Memory and Place
Opened in April 2025, Hotel Wren is the vision of Los Angeles–based designer Jessica Pell of Manola Studio, conceived as a love letter to the high desert. The property transforms a mid-century roadside motel into a contemplative retreat, preserving its original spirit while elevating it into a refined architectural experience. The philosophy is rooted in emotional connection to place, where design becomes a dialogue between human presence and natural landscape. Rather than imposing itself on the environment, the hotel responds to it with restraint, intention, and reverence.
A Dialogue with the Desert
The architecture of Hotel Wren embraces the textures and tones of the Mojave, translating them into a tactile, immersive environment. Hand-troweled plaster, carved wood, terracotta floors, and custom tilework reflect the colors of the surrounding terrain, soft sand, adobe, rust, sage, and sun-bleached stone. Original structural elements, including steel casement windows, have been carefully restored, preserving the building’s mid-century character. Inside, a central living-room-style lobby anchors the experience, featuring a sculptural fireplace, hand-carved detailing, and a sweeping mural that echoes the desert landscape beyond. Every surface feels considered, every material grounded in place.
Private Residences for Slow Living
With only 12 rooms, Hotel Wren offers an atmosphere of profound intimacy. Each suite is designed as a private residence, with built-in banquettes, gas fireplaces, and curated interiors that encourage stillness and reflection. The aesthetic is layered yet restrained, combining desert-hued palettes with handcrafted finishes and natural textures. King and queen beds dressed in fine linens sit alongside thoughtful details such as artisanal teas, meditation blankets, and yoga mats. Some rooms open directly onto private patios facing the desert, where bathtubs and seating areas invite guests to live in rhythm with the landscape. Others offer more enclosed courtyards, creating a cocoon-like sense of privacy. The absence of televisions reinforces the hotel’s philosophy of presence and disconnection.
Windsong: A Curated Desert Bodega
At the heart of the property, Windsong serves as both boutique and cultural extension of the hotel’s ethos. This intimate space offers a carefully curated selection of objects, ceramics, textiles, apothecary goods, and rare books, alongside pantry staples and local provisions. More than a shop, it functions as a tactile archive of desert life, reflecting the artistic and ecological spirit of the region. Every item has been chosen to deepen the guest’s relationship with place, extending the experience beyond the room into a broader narrative of craft and landscape.
Culinary Simplicity and Local Connection
While Hotel Wren does not center itself around traditional restaurant dining, its approach to food is rooted in simplicity, quality, and locality. Guests are offered thoughtfully curated provisions, artisanal coffee, and seasonal selections that can be enjoyed in-room or within shared spaces. Nearby, the growing creative scene of Twentynine Palms offers additional culinary touchpoints, from desert cafés to artist-run gathering spaces. The experience reflects the wider rhythm of the high desert, unhurried, communal, and deeply connected to its environment.
Wellness Through Stillness
Wellness at Hotel Wren is not defined by formal facilities, but by the landscape itself. The design encourages slowness, reflection, and reconnection, whether through sunrise moments on private terraces, evening walks into the desert, or silent observation of the shifting light. In collaboration with its surroundings, the hotel becomes a space of natural recalibration, where the absence of distraction allows for a deeper sense of clarity and presence. The desert itself becomes the primary therapeutic environment, offering stillness as its most essential luxury.
A Contemporary Desert Icon
Hotel Wren captures a growing desire for travel experiences rooted in authenticity, design integrity, and emotional resonance. It stands as a modern interpretation of desert hospitality, where heritage architecture, curated interiors, and vast natural landscapes converge into a singular, immersive experience. In this place, luxury is not defined by abundance, but by attention, silence, and the profound beauty of what remains untouched.
