A Remote Arctic Setting Between Forest, Snow and Northern Light Skies

Set in Saariselkä, within one of Europe’s last great wildernesses, Gáldu Hotel & Spa is surrounded by dense pine forests, frozen landscapes in winter, and luminous summer nights where the sun barely fades. The property sits on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, a vast protected area known for its pristine nature, hiking trails, and exceptional Northern Lights visibility. The feeling is one of complete immersion, where the hotel does not interrupt the landscape but rather melts into it. In this remote corner of Lapland, the absence of noise, light pollution, and urban rhythm becomes a defining luxury, allowing guests to experience nature in its purest, most elemental form.

A Contemporary Family Vision Rooted in Arctic Hospitality

Gáldu Hotel & Spa is a privately owned project created by Finnish entrepreneurs Nora Ståhlberg Mehtäjärvi and Jermu Mehtäjärvi, shaped by a vision of refined yet grounded Arctic hospitality. Opened in 2025, the property reflects a new generation of Nordic luxury, where authenticity, sustainability, and emotional connection to place matter more than excess. Designed as a year-round retreat, Gáldu is conceived as a holistic destination where guests come not only to stay but to reset, reconnect, and experience the therapeutic rhythm of Lapland’s changing seasons, from polar nights to the midnight sun.

Nordic Architecture, Log Design and Japandi-Inspired Interiors

Designed by Finnish architect Pekka Mäki, the architecture of Gáldu Hotel & Spa is rooted in traditional log construction, reinterpreted through a modern Nordic lens that emphasizes purity, simplicity, and harmony with the environment. Inside, the aesthetic blends Scandinavian minimalism with subtle Japandi influences, creating spaces defined by natural materials, muted tones, and soft lighting. Large floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Arctic wilderness like living artwork, ensuring that the landscape remains the central visual element throughout the hotel. The interiors favor tactile textures such as warm wood, wool, and stone, while the design language remains deliberately understated, allowing calmness and clarity to define the atmosphere.

Rooms and Suites Framing the Arctic Wilderness

The hotel features 31 rooms in total, including 11 Forest Havens, 18 Stellar Havens, and 2 spacious Signature Suites. Each category is oriented toward the surrounding forest, with floor-to-ceiling windows that transform every stay into a cinematic encounter with nature. The Forest Havens on the ground floor immerse guests directly into snowy woodland views, while the Stellar Havens elevate the experience with sky-facing perspectives ideal for watching the Northern Lights or the shifting Arctic sky. The Signature Suites offer expansive living spaces, oversized beds, and indulgent bathrooms with jacuzzis designed for two, creating a sense of private retreat within the vastness of Lapland. The palette remains consistent throughout, with soft greys, natural wood, and understated textiles that echo the quiet rhythm of the landscape.

Nordic Cuisine Rooted in Local Ingredients and Seasonal Purity

At the heart of Gáldu’s culinary identity lies a commitment to local sourcing and northern flavors, expressed through a contemporary interpretation of Lapland cuisine. The restaurant, with a capacity of approximately 80 guests, focuses on seasonal ingredients such as Arctic fish, wild berries, reindeer, and forest herbs, prepared with refined simplicity. The dining experience is designed to feel intimate and connected to place, often accompanied by views of the surrounding wilderness through large windows. Breakfast is generous and rooted in Nordic tradition, while dinner evolves into a more structured experience that highlights the purity and intensity of northern ingredients. The culinary philosophy reflects the broader ethos of the hotel, where authenticity and restraint define luxury.

A Forest Spa Defined by Contrast, Heat and Ice

The spa experience at Gáldu Hotel & Spa is one of its most distinctive features, drawing from ancient Finnish and Sámi wellness traditions. Named after the Sámi word for cold spring, the spa combines multiple saunas, including traditional Finnish sauna experiences, a steam room, and panoramic heat cabins overlooking the forest. Outdoors, guests move between warm jacuzzis, heated pools, and invigorating cold plunges, embracing the Nordic ritual of contrast bathing. This cycle of heat and ice is enhanced by the surrounding silence of the forest, creating a deeply meditative atmosphere. Complementary wellness experiences such as yoga sessions, fireside relaxation spaces, and seasonal treatments further extend the sense of restoration, making the spa an immersive journey into Arctic wellbeing rather than a conventional hotel facility.

A Timeless Escape into the Stillness of the North

Gáldu Hotel & Spa captures the essence of modern Arctic luxury, where design, nature, and wellbeing converge in a setting of extraordinary purity. It is a place defined not by spectacle, but by stillness, where time slows, light shifts gently across the forest, and every moment feels suspended between earth and sky, offering an experience that lingers long after departure.
