Kulu Ora Lodge - New Hotel in Uganda
A Remote Eden in Murchison Falls National Park
Tucked away in a newly designated low-use zone at the heart of Murchison Falls National Park, Kulu Ora occupies a 75,000-hectare expanse of pristine wilderness that few travelers have ever explored. This is Uganda at its most elemental, far removed from the well-trodden safari circuits. The lodge rests along the banks of the Nile, just beneath a series of rapids where the river splits dramatically around a jungle-clad island, creating a soundscape both powerful and hypnotic. The surrounding terrain is lush and untamed, where sycamore figs, sausage trees, and borassus palms frame endless views, and wildlife moves freely through landscapes that feel almost primordial.
A Vision Born from Exploration and Legacy
The story of Kulu Ora begins with a journey into the unknown. Conceived by WildPlaces Africa, the lodge reflects a philosophy rooted in discovery, conservation, and authenticity. Reaching the site required cutting through dense bush and crossing marshes and rivers, an expedition that revealed a landscape untouched by tourism. This sense of exploration defines the spirit of Kulu Ora, whose name means “river” in two local languages, honoring its deep connection to the Nile. As the seventh addition to the WildPlaces portfolio, set to open in early 2026, the lodge continues a family legacy spanning generations, dedicated to showcasing Uganda’s wild beauty in its purest form.
Design that Blends Seamlessly with Nature
Kulu Ora’s architecture is a masterclass in low-impact luxury, designed to disappear into its surroundings while elevating the guest experience. Canvas-walled structures rest lightly on metal girders and wooden poles, allowing the entire lodge, aside from its pools, to be dismantled without leaving a trace. Interiors strike a delicate balance between heritage and modernity, with handcrafted and upcycled furniture pieces that tell their own stories. Georgian sideboards sit alongside locally made linen sofas, while natural textures and soft tones echo the surrounding landscape. Every detail feels intentional, creating an atmosphere of calm, authenticity, and quiet sophistication.
Intimate Canvas Suites Overlooking the Nile
The lodge features 11 spacious canvas-walled suites, including a two-bedroom family suite designed for shared experiences. Each accommodation is elevated by timber floors, airy living spaces, and expansive bathrooms that open toward the river. Deep copper bathtubs are positioned to capture uninterrupted views of the Nile, transforming daily rituals into moments of pure immersion. Private plunge pools extend the experience outdoors, where guests can watch the river flow endlessly past from the privacy of their own terrace. The design is both tactile and sensory, with natural materials and soft textiles creating a cocoon of comfort in the heart of the bush.
A Culinary Experience Rooted in the Land
Dining at Kulu Ora is an intimate and grounded affair, shaped by the rhythms of the land. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, with fresh produce grown in an on-site walled garden that supplies herbs, vegetables, and fruits such as pawpaw and lemon. The cuisine reflects a balance between simplicity and refinement, allowing the natural flavors of Uganda to shine. Meals are served in relaxed yet elegant settings, where the sounds of the wilderness become part of the experience, and every dish feels connected to the landscape from which it comes.
Wellness Above the River
Perched above the Nile, the lodge’s spa offers a serene retreat where the boundaries between nature and well-being dissolve. Treatments are crafted using locally produced oils and butters, drawing on Uganda’s rich natural resources to create deeply restorative experiences. The main swimming pool, designed for both leisure and laps, is surrounded by a generous deck with daybeds and a bar, inviting long, languid afternoons under the African sun. A thoughtfully curated library, assembled by co-founder Pamela Wright, adds another layer to the experience, offering a quiet space for reflection and discovery.
A New Standard for Conscious Safari Luxury
Kulu Ora is more than a destination; it is a philosophy of travel rooted in conservation and connection. Fully solar-powered and designed with minimal environmental impact, the lodge operates in harmony with its surroundings. A conservation levy included in each stay supports the protection of the national park and local community initiatives, ensuring that every visit contributes to the preservation of this extraordinary ecosystem. Here, luxury is defined not by excess, but by authenticity, privacy, and a deep sense of place.
