Svart Hotel - New Hotel in Arctic, Northern Norway
At the Foot of the Svartisen Glacier
Set in Northern Norway, in the Meløy region just above the Arctic Circle, Svart is envisioned at the base of the Svartisen glacier, overlooking the pristine waters of the Holandsfjorden fjord. This remote and fragile environment defines the entire project. Here, the landscape is both dramatic and delicate — a place of rare biodiversity, shifting Arctic light, and extreme climatic conditions. The hotel’s location is deliberately immersive, placing guests in direct dialogue with one of Europe’s most untouched natural settings.
A Radical Vision of Sustainable Luxury
Svart is conceived as the world’s first energy-positive hotel, meaning it is designed to produce more energy than it consumes over its lifecycle. This ambitious vision is at the core of the project — redefining the relationship between luxury hospitality and environmental responsibility. The goal is not simply to reduce impact, but to create a self-sufficient ecosystem — one that integrates energy production, resource management, and sustainable food systems into the guest experience. The project is currently in an evaluation and planning phase, and construction has not yet been completed.
A Floating Circle in the Arctic Landscape
Designed by the renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, Svart takes the form of a striking circular structure extending over the fjord on wooden stilts. This ring-shaped design allows for 360-degree panoramic views of the glacier, mountains, and Northern Lights, while minimizing the building’s footprint on the environment. The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Norwegian structures such as the rorbue (fishermen’s cabins) and fiskehjell (fish-drying racks), reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Solar panels, geothermal systems, and energy-efficient materials are seamlessly integrated into the design, enabling the building to reduce energy consumption by approximately 85% compared to conventional hotels.
Immersion in Nature (Planned)
While final details may evolve, the project is expected to include around 100 rooms, all designed to maximize views and connection with the surrounding landscape. The circular layout ensures that each space opens toward the fjord or glacier, creating a continuous visual relationship with nature. The experience is envisioned as deeply immersive — where architecture dissolves into landscape, and guests are fully enveloped by the Arctic environment.
A Self-Sufficient Ecosystem (Planned)
Svart’s vision extends to gastronomy, with plans for multiple restaurants supplied by on-site sustainable farming systems. The concept embraces a “farm-to-table” philosophy taken to its most advanced form — where food production, energy use, and waste management are all integrated into a closed-loop system. Dining becomes part of a broader ecological narrative, rooted in locality and self-sufficiency.
Arctic Immersion
The hotel is expected to include a large spa and wellness area, designed to reflect Nordic traditions and the surrounding environment. Experiences will be deeply connected to the landscape: glacier hiking, Northern Lights observation, cold-water immersion, and outdoor activities shaped by the seasons. The intention is clear — to offer a form of wellness that is inseparable from nature itself.
A Vision Still in the Making
Svart is not yet a destination — it is a vision. A project that challenges the very foundations of hospitality by proving that luxury and sustainability can coexist at the highest level. If realized as imagined, it will not simply be a hotel, but a global benchmark — a place where architecture, nature, and innovation converge to redefine how we travel.
