Vermelho Lagoa - New Hotel in Melides, Portugal
Between the Melides Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean
Just a few minutes from the whitewashed village of Melides, Vermelho Lagoa enjoys an extraordinary location between the protected Melides Lagoon and the Atlantic coastline. This peaceful corner of the Alentejo has quietly become one of Europe’s most desirable destinations, celebrated for its untouched beaches, fragrant pine forests and relaxed rhythm of life. Unlike neighboring Comporta, where glamour often takes center stage, Melides has preserved a quieter, more authentic character. Here, fishermen still launch their boats at sunrise, wild dunes stretch for miles and nature remains beautifully untouched. It is this atmosphere of discretion and authenticity that first captivated Christian Louboutin, inspiring him to establish what has become one of Portugal’s most distinctive hospitality projects. With panoramic views across the lagoon and easy access to the Atlantic shoreline, Vermelho Lagoa invites guests to discover a slower, more contemplative side of coastal Portugal.
A New Chapter in Christian Louboutin’s Hospitality Story
When Vermelho Melides opened its doors in 2023, it revealed a deeply personal side of Christian Louboutin. Rather than creating a branded hotel, the designer imagined a home filled with memories, craftsmanship and objects collected throughout a lifetime of travel. Vermelho Lagoa continues this vision while introducing a different atmosphere. Developed on the site of a former seaside hotel that has been completely reimagined, the new property embraces a lighter, more relaxed coastal identity while remaining faithful to the values that define the Vermelho collection: exceptional artisanship, emotional storytelling and a profound respect for local culture. The project has been developed in partnership with hospitality management company Marugal, whose discreet approach to luxury perfectly complements Louboutin’s creative philosophy.
Architecture Inspired by the Portuguese Coast
The architectural transformation of Vermelho Lagoa has been entrusted to Portuguese architect Madalena Caiado, while the interiors are designed by Olivia Putman, internationally renowned designer and daughter of the late Andrée Putman. A lifelong friend of Christian Louboutin, Olivia brings her signature balance of elegance and personality to every space. The design draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape rather than imposing itself upon it. Clean contemporary volumes blend naturally into the coastal environment, while handcrafted Portuguese ceramics, bespoke furnishings and carefully selected decorative pieces create interiors that feel collected rather than curated. Natural light becomes one of the defining architectural elements. Expansive openings frame views of the lagoon and surrounding vegetation, while warm textures, artisanal finishes and layered materials create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply welcoming.
Ten Suites Designed for Quiet Luxury
With just 10 individually designed suites, Vermelho Lagoa embraces the intimacy of a true boutique hotel. Every accommodation has been imagined as a private retreat where thoughtful design and exceptional craftsmanship replace unnecessary excess. The interiors celebrate Portuguese artistry through custom made furnishings, handcrafted decorative elements and locally produced ceramics, creating spaces that feel authentic, residential and timeless. Large windows welcome abundant natural light while opening onto peaceful views of the surrounding lagoon and gardens. Rather than following contemporary hospitality trends, the suites reflect Christian Louboutin’s personal aesthetic, where every object tells a story and every detail contributes to an atmosphere of warmth, creativity and understated luxury.
Dining Inspired by Portugal’s Coastal Lifestyle
Food has always played a central role in the Vermelho experience, and Vermelho Lagoa continues that philosophy through a culinary offering inspired by Portugal’s Atlantic coast and seasonal local ingredients. Guests will also have access to the acclaimed Xtian, the signature restaurant at nearby Vermelho Melides, which has already established itself as one of the region’s most distinctive dining destinations. Together, the two properties create a gastronomic experience rooted in Portuguese traditions while embracing the creativity and generosity that define Mediterranean hospitality. Whether enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the lagoon or lingering over dinner after sunset, dining becomes another way of experiencing the slower rhythm of Melides.
Wellness Rooted in Nature
Wellbeing is one of the defining pillars of Vermelho Lagoa. Designed as a peaceful coastal sanctuary, the hotel places particular emphasis on relaxation, restoration and the healing qualities of its natural surroundings. The property will feature an expansive wellness space dedicated to holistic treatments and moments of quiet retreat, complementing the slower pace of life that defines the Alentejo coast. The nearby lagoon, Atlantic beaches and surrounding pine forests naturally extend the wellness experience beyond the hotel itself, encouraging guests to reconnect with nature through walking, swimming and mindful exploration. Rather than offering wellness as a standalone experience, Vermelho Lagoa integrates it into every aspect of the stay, creating an environment where simplicity becomes the ultimate luxury.
A New Artistic Landmark on Portugal’s Atlantic Coast
With Vermelho Lagoa, Christian Louboutin once again demonstrates that hospitality can be deeply personal, emotionally resonant and profoundly connected to place. More than simply a second hotel, the property represents an evolution of his creative universe, one that celebrates craftsmanship, meaningful design and the extraordinary beauty of Melides. Intimate in scale yet ambitious in vision, Vermelho Lagoa is poised to become one of Portugal’s most sought after boutique hotels, offering travelers an experience where art, architecture and nature come together with effortless elegance.
