Lagen Island Resort El Nido - New Hotel in Philippines
Lagen Island Resort, El Nido – A Regenerative Island Icon Reborn in Palawan
A Private Island in the Heart of Bacuit Bay
Set within the protected seascape of Bacuit Bay in El Nido, the resort occupies a 6.39-hectare private island shaped by time, tide, and tectonic beauty. Towering limestone formations rise dramatically from turquoise waters, framing a landscape where dense tropical rainforest meets the sea in an uninterrupted continuum. The island is both remote and deeply immersive, accessible only by boat, offering a rare sense of arrival that feels almost ceremonial in its stillness.
A Vision of Regenerative Luxury by Ayala Land Hospitality
The transformation of Lagen Island is led by Ayala Land Hospitality in collaboration with WATG and Wimberly Interiors, reimagining the resort not as a conventional renovation but as a full ecological and cultural reawakening. Guided by regenerative tourism principles, the project positions the island as a “living ecosystem resort,” where architecture, nature, and heritage are inseparable. The design strategy is rooted in preserving existing structures, reducing environmental impact, and elevating guest experience through deeper immersion in place.
Architecture Shaped by Sea and Forest
The architectural language of the resort is defined by its duality: The Sea and The Forest. Overwater structures and forest-set rooms are conceived as two distinct yet interconnected worlds, each responding to its environment. Buildings are opened toward the landscape, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior. Elevated walkways weave through vegetation and limestone outcrops, allowing nature to remain uninterrupted beneath. Inspired by traditional Paraw boats, rooflines and structural gestures evoke movement, lightness, and welcome, while materials such as timber, woven fibers, and stone ground the design in Filipino identity.
Rooms and Villas Immersed in Nature
The resort will feature 42 accommodations, including water cottages and forest rooms designed as intimate sanctuaries within the island’s diverse topography. Water villas extend toward the lagoon, where interiors are oriented to capture uninterrupted views of shifting tides. Forest rooms, nestled among ancient trees and dramatic rock formations, open both to sea and jungle, creating a constant dialogue between green canopy and blue horizon. Interiors are enriched with hand-carved wood, woven textures, and artisanal detailing inspired by Palawan’s indigenous weaving and carving traditions, particularly those of the Tagbanua and Palaw’an communities.
Arrival, Social Spaces, and Island Rhythm
The Arrival Building sets the tone for the entire experience, reimagined as both reception and social heart. Inspired by the form of a Paraw boat, its architecture extends outward toward the sea in a symbolic gesture of welcome. This space transitions fluidly from daytime lounge to evening gathering venue, where natural light, emerald tones, and limestone views define the atmosphere. Across the island, social areas including the Sunset Bar and Clubhouse are designed as open-air stages for light, sound, and landscape, where each moment is framed by horizon and tide.
Culinary Expression Rooted in Place
Dining at Lagen Island becomes a curated expression of Palawan’s cultural and natural richness. The Clubhouse blends Filipino culinary heritage with contemporary presentation, highlighting local ingredients and coastal flavors. Terracotta textures and woven design elements reference indigenous craftsmanship, while open-air settings allow the landscape to remain ever-present. The Sunset Bar, positioned directly on the beach, becomes a cinematic gathering point, where cocktails are served against the shifting palette of dusk and the silhouettes of limestone cliffs.
Wellness Within the Living Forest
The spa is conceived as a deeply immersive sanctuary, integrated within the forest itself and carefully woven around existing trees and natural formations. Elevated walkways ensure minimal ecological disruption while enhancing the sensation of floating within nature. Treatment spaces are cocoon-like, designed to evoke warmth, calm, and sensory retreat. Wellness here extends beyond traditional treatments, encompassing swimming, diving, guided nature exploration, and moments of stillness shaped by the island’s natural rhythms.
Sustainability as a Design Philosophy
Sustainability is not an overlay but the foundation of the entire renovation. Existing materials, such as nara wood, are reused and transformed into architectural elements. Original structures are preserved wherever possible, minimizing environmental impact. Local craftsmanship and indigenous materials are central to the design narrative, reinforcing both cultural authenticity and ecological responsibility. Even landscaping is carefully managed to protect native ecosystems while enhancing guest immersion in nature.
A New Era for El Nido’s Island Luxury
Lagen Island Resort’s rebirth represents a shift toward a more conscious form of hospitality, where luxury is defined by connection, restraint, and meaning. It is a place where architecture listens to landscape, where culture is embedded in every detail, and where time slows to the rhythm of sea and forest. In this new chapter, the island becomes not just a destination, but a living dialogue between people and place.
