Tucked away on the quiet Florhofgasse, between Zurich’s historic center and university district, Villa Florhof offers a rare sense of privacy just steps from the city’s cultural landmarks. The protected historic property traces its origins to the Middle Ages and is closely connected to Zurich’s centuries-old silk trade. Following a meticulous restoration carried out in collaboration with heritage authorities, the building has been transformed into Lalique’s first boutique hotel in Zurich. Rather than a traditional large-scale hotel, Villa Florhof has been conceived as an elegant private residence, with just 13 individually designed rooms and suites. The property sits within walking distance of the Grossmünster, Kunsthaus and Bahnhofstrasse, while Zurich Central Station is around ten minutes away on foot. Zurich Airport can be reached by train in approximately 20 minutes.

A New Expression of Lalique Hospitality

Villa Florhof joins the Lalique Hospitality collection, alongside Villa René Lalique and Château Hochberg in Alsace, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey near Bordeaux and The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in Scotland. Each property within the collection is designed around its own history and sense of place, rather than following a standardized hotel concept. At Villa Florhof, Lalique’s identity is woven into the building through bespoke crystal installations, glasswork, lighting and decorative details. The result is understated rather than overtly opulent, with Lalique craftsmanship appearing throughout the interiors in dialogue with the architecture and the building’s rich history.

Contemporary Design Meets Zurich’s Silk Heritage

The architecture and interiors were created by Green & Mingarelli Design, whose approach combines craftsmanship, rich materials and discreet contemporary elegance. The interiors reinterpret the history of Villa Florhof through a sophisticated palette and bespoke details. Lalique’s Interior Design Studio developed a series of custom crystal and architectural glass installations specifically for the property, with more than a dozen pieces integrated throughout the hotel. The butterfly and mulberry leaf motifs are recurring references to Zurich’s historic silk industry. In the lobby, large-scale crystal panels featuring Papillon and Feuilles de Mûrier establish the visual language of the hotel. The staircase provides one of the property’s most theatrical moments, with 23 illuminated crystal butterflies appearing to rise naturally through the stairwell. Above, 14 Alizé crystal elements are suspended from the ten-meter-high ceiling. In the signature restaurant, 104 individually illuminated crystal butterflies cover the ceiling, creating an immersive interpretation of the motif. Elsewhere, Merles et Raisins crystal panels reference the vineyards that once surrounded the property. The hotel also features a collection of Lalique pieces, alongside a series of works by Damien Hirst, including a wall installation of 14 colored crystal panels depicting butterflies.

13 Rooms and Suites

Villa Florhof offers just 13 rooms and suites, each individually designed and named after motifs from René Lalique’s artistic repertoire and the history of the silk trade. The accommodation combines historic architectural details with contemporary furnishings by Green & Mingarelli Design and selected pieces from Lalique Maison. The Suite René Lalique, the hotel’s principal suite, represents the most complete expression of the collaboration between the historic building and the Lalique universe. Throughout the rooms, bespoke brass plaques created in collaboration with Meljac identify each space with names such as Papillon, Libellule, Masque de Femme, Panthère and Hirondelles. Crystal Papillon details continue the narrative, adding subtle Lalique signatures without overwhelming the intimate character of the rooms.

Bar, Brasserie and Signature Restaurant

The ground-floor Bar & Brasserie opens onto a large garden terrace, creating a relaxed setting for breakfast, lunch, aperitifs and dinner. Chef John Schiffmann leads the culinary offering, focusing on quality ingredients and a relaxed approach to hospitality. The hotel’s Signature Restaurant is scheduled to open in autumn 2026 in the grand rooms on the first floor. The restaurant will overlook the historic buildings surrounding Villa Florhof and will become the property’s principal gastronomic destination. A historic vaulted cellar beneath the villa has also been carefully restored and transformed into a wine cellar. The intimate space can host private tastings, dinners and events.

The Davidoff Cigar Lounge

The Salon Davidoff adds another distinctive element to Villa Florhof. Designed as a dedicated cigar lounge, the space features professional cigar storage and a curated selection of premium cigars. Its Art Deco-inspired doors, decorated with deeply sandblasted botanical motifs, were specially created by the Lalique Interior Design Studio. The lounge connects directly with the hotel’s bar and garden, giving it the atmosphere of a refined private club.

Five Centuries of History

Villa Florhof was first mentioned in historical documents in 1447, although its origins extend further back into the Middle Ages. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the property passed through the hands of merchants, physicians, craftsmen and prominent Zurich families. Its history became particularly intertwined with the city’s silk industry from the mid-16th century onward. Zurich developed into an important European center for silk production, with raw silk arriving from Italy, techniques coming from Lyon and local artisans contributing to the city’s growing reputation. The name Florhof continues to evoke this heritage today. During the 17th and 18th centuries, patrician families including the Heideggers and Oeris shaped the architecture and gardens of the property. Many of these elements remain part of the villa’s identity. In 1907, architect Karl Weigle modernized the building, which officially reopened as the Florhof Hotel and Pension in 1908. Over the following decades, the hotel became a discreet refuge for artists, writers and intellectuals, welcoming figures including Günter Grass, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugène Ionesco, Michael Ende, Bruno Ganz and Christopher Lee. The property’s most important architectural elements were placed under heritage protection in 1973. In 2022, Swiss entrepreneurs Silvio Denz and Peter Spuhler acquired the building, paving the way for its transformation into Villa Florhof.

Lalique Craftsmanship at Every Turn

Lalique’s presence at Villa Florhof goes far beyond decoration. Crystal, glass and lighting become integral elements of the architecture itself. From the illuminated butterflies of the staircase to the custom Champs-Élysées chandelier, every installation has been designed specifically for its location within the building. In the wine cellar, Merles et Raisins crystal panels frame the entrance, while the Femme Bras Levés motif marks the passage toward the white wine cellar. In the bar and lounge, crystal details extend to sliding doors and bespoke handles. The Bridal Suite features a custom Dahlia crystal shower panel and a Champs-Élysées crystal dome made from nine illuminated leaves mounted on golden metal stems. Together, these details create an interior that feels deeply connected to Lalique while remaining rooted in the history and architecture of Villa Florhof.
